Antiviruses and IoT – Protecting Against IoT Threats

As we become more dependent on connected devices to manage our homes, businesses and daily lives cybersecurity has been elevated to the top of many peoples’ priority lists. But the type of threats that IoT devices face are vastly different from those seen on traditional computers and require a new set of tools and strategies to defend against them.

With a myriad of IoT devices available, each with its own operating systems software and features it’s no wonder that malware attacks targeting these kinds of devices are increasing. The absence of standard software can make it difficult to create security tools for a variety of devices.

In 2016, hackers used an ingenuous hack on IoT devices to launch one of the biggest botnet attacks of all time, destabilizing parts of the Internet and rendering websites like The New York Times, Brian Krebs’s website, and French web host OVH unavailable for hours. The attackers went through the Internet to find default usernames and passwords for IoT devices. They then gathered an army of IoT users to launch the DDoS attacks.

When it comes to protecting against these types of threats, antiviruses and iot have a vital role to play. However, this type of security software must increase its vigilance to include monitoring how IoT devices communicate with each other and with the outside world, while also maintaining strong password practices two-factor authentication, and up-to date patching. When combined with other security tools such as these, they form an effective defense against IoT threats.
