Here’s my problem… The lighting sucks

Synopsis

A series of novels by James Patterson about the complex and brilliant detective Alex Cross. Hodge is the third actor to portray Cross, following in the footsteps of Morgan Freeman who first portrayed him on screen in 1997’s Kiss the Girls and again in the 2001 film sequel Along Came a Spider; and Tyler Perry as the title character in 2012’s Alex Cross, which flopped at the box office and forced Liongate to abandon the previously planned sequel Double Cross. I first started following Ald Hodge’s career when I fell in love with his character in Leverage. His performance as “hacker” Hardison was great and I totally buy his portrayal of Alex Cross as well. The writing is solid, the performances are excellent all around, and the direction and editing are top notch.

First was the cocktail lounge

I don’t know anyone who lives every moment of their inner life in such darkness. I’m only 40 minutes into the first episode, but I’m already struggling to see the details of many scenes. Three scenes in particular stand out. I don’t frequent bars or cocktail lounges, but even in the darkest restaurant I’ve ever been to, there was enough lighting that I could see the faces of other people at the table. Second was the bad guy’s lair.

This is not a romantic dinner for two

Would someone working on detailed plans and projects really do it in such dim lighting? Certainly, a perfectionist wants to clearly see everything he does. Third, there’s the house where Alex comes to dinner. This is a gathering of family and friends. The entire house is dark: foyer, living room, and dining room.

Why so dark?

Also, every room in the police building is dark. Wouldn’t the forensic expert have a very well-lit operating room? If they’re trying to create a mood, I’m more focused on seeing than on plot and dialogue. It’s a choice that many shows have made over the years. You know, anyone with vision problems just couldn’t see it.

My father certainly couldn’t

That said, I could be wrong about the reason for the darkness. I stopped watching How I Met Your Father on another streaming service because it was also so dark it wasn’t enjoyable. A little internet research revealed that the problem was with the service, not the show. When the show aired on the network, the lighting was fine.
