Whether they’re exploring the stars, escaping dystopias, or making the world a better place, these women are what science fiction is all about. The Dune High School trilogy is a collection of short stories written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. A prequel to the original Dune, it tells the story of how the Rossak Sisterhood evolved into the Bene Gesserit. The incident with Valya Harkonnen using the voice is from one called ‘Mentats of Dune’. All three books intertwine the development of the Sisterhood, the Mentats, the Navigators, and the Suk Doctor. This spinoff is more like Game of Thrones than Dune. Having said that, Dune: Prophecy is everything I hoped it would be and more. It’s a great spinoff of a beloved film franchise. I have to start by saying that I’ve never read the source material or seen the original film. My experience with Dune is based on the two Dune movies that have come out in the last few years, starring Timothy Chalamet and Zendaya. Those two movies (especially Dune: Part 2) are two of my favorite movies I’ve seen in the last few years. I absolutely love both of them, so I had high hopes for this series. Dune: Prophecy is a series that takes place 10,000 years before the Dune movies and follows the Harkonnen sisters as they start the Bene Gesserit as they fight against forces that threaten the future of humanity. The series may be more like Game of Thrones than Dune, but either way… it’s a lot of fun. The most important thing about this show is that it does exactly what it set out to do in that it deepens our understanding of the Bene Gesserit. You don’t have to have seen the two Dune movies to enjoy this, but you’ll definitely enjoy it more if you have.
