Rating – 52: Overall a very bad movie that feels like it was made for a ‘Booktok’; Amy Adams can’t do much considering this story is silly despite its strong messages about the struggles of motherhood
Direction – Very Bad: The direction on a macro level is very simple and bland, it gives the impression that this movie was made specifically for ‘Booktok’, the direction is very bland, forced and simplistic because it feels like a mother reading this story to me.
Story: This concept is actually very stupid, that this movie was made for ‘Booktok’ because the book is ‘Booktok’ stupid, but they do a terrible job of introducing it and showing its importance because it feels like just a small detail in the whole movie, the plot structure is very good even if it is very obvious because the main character is a symbol of the movie; struggles with motherhood and how it is okay to not be a perfect mother Script – Very Bad: The dialogue is simple, bland, and written like in “Booktok”; the dialogue is so bad that there is literally a scene in the first 20 minutes of the movie where the main character says “I am Nightbitch”; the humor is good, but very forced; the symbolism is deep, as the entire movie is about the struggles of motherhood and accepting that there is no such thing as a perfect mother or person; the foreshadowing only exists because the movie is so formulaic Acting – Very Good: Amy Adams – Good (her performance is only good because she’s Amy Adams; she’s given nothing to work with), Scoot McNairy – Very Good (she has very good chemistry with Adams and does a good one-sided dynamic job), Rest of the Cast – Decent (lots of background actors who are okay, mostly supporting Adams) Cinematography – Decent: Simple Editing – Decent: Simple Visual Effects – Pretty Bad: Pretty cheesy Pacing – The pacing is a bit slow as the narration progresses the story Climax – The climax is pretty forced Tone – The tone is very much like this movie was made for “Endnotes” Booktok – Released at the Austin film festival; It’s obvious who this movie is for, I’m clearly not the target audience; This should have been the movie that saved Amy Adams, not destroyed her
